LS by Field, 17 April, to Gideon Welles, referring to a speech by John Parker Hale in which they are both mentioned, and enclosing copies of two other letters. The first of these is from Hale to Field, 19 Jan., about rates of commission for purchasing vessels in New York; the second is Field's reply, 21 Jan., in which he refers to governor Edwin Denison Morgan's role in some such purchases. This is annotated by Welles, who says that Field misunderstood the situation and was prejudiced against Morgan.

Cyrus West Field (1819-1892) was a merchant and capitalist who promoted the laying of the first Atlantic cable linking the U.S. with Europe. He formed a company to build cable communications between Newfoundland and Ireland, helped establish elevated trains in New York City, and participated in the development of the Wabash Railroad.
